A 5-day trip to Cancún

Cancún is Mexico's resort capital — the Hotel Zone's beaches, and the Maya ruins and cenotes inland.

Cancún is two places — a thin barrier-island Hotel Zone of resorts and clubs, and a gateway to the Riviera Maya's ruins, cenotes, and quieter beaches.

Most visitors never leave the Hotel Zone, which is fine if you want a beach-and-pool week. But an hour inland is Chichén Itzá, and south along the coast are Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and cenotes (freshwater sinkholes) you can swim in.

It's safe, developed, and easy; the cost is that it's the most Americanized part of Mexico. Get out of the zone for a day or two and the trip changes.

How to plan 5 days in Cancún

  • Get out of the Hotel Zone for at least a day — cenotes, Tulum, or Chichén Itzá.
  • Use the R1/R2 buses up and down the Hotel Zone — cheap and frequent.
  • Carry small peso bills for tips and cenote entry.
  • Check sargassum (seaweed) forecasts if traveling summer–fall; it affects beaches.
  • Book Chichén Itzá and cenote tours ahead in peak season.
