Iceland
A 3-day trip to Blue Lagoon & Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland
Raw volcanic badlands, steaming vents, and the world's most famous mineral bath.
Most visitors experience the Reykjanes Peninsula solely as the blurry black moss corridor between Keflavík International Airport and Reykjavík, punctuated only by a booked slot at the Blue Lagoon. That is a tactical mistake. The UNESCO Global Geopark covering this peninsula represents the Earth's Mid-Atlantic Ridge breaking above sea level, delivering bubbling mud cauldrons, sea-battered basalt cliffs, and recent volcanic fissure fields without the six-hour drive times of the South Coast.
Trip length
3 days
Best time to go
Late May through September for driving ease and open coastal roads, or October to March if your priority is viewing the Northern Lights over raw volcanic fields.
What your 3-day plan includes
- A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
- Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
- Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
- Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.
How to plan 3 days in Blue Lagoon & Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland
- Treat this peninsula as an active arrival day: pick up your rental car at Keflavík Airport, run the southern coastal loop via Route 427, and finish with a pre-booked evening soak at the Blue Lagoon before driving into Reykjavík.
- Do not book the Blue Lagoon without at least a 2.5-hour buffer after your scheduled flight touchdown to allow for customs, baggage claim, and car rental queues.
- If traveling between November and March, check safetravel.is and road.is every morning; Atlantic gales regularly close Route 43 and coastal stretches.
- Pair Seltún geothermal field with Lake Kleifarvatn on Route 42 rather than backtracking along Highway 41 to save an hour of redundant highway driving.
- Skip staying overnight in Keflavík town unless you have a flight departing before 08:00; base yourself in Reykjavík or directly at the Svartsengi silica retreats instead.
