Barbados

Barbados

A 7-day trip to Barbados

Two coastlines, rum-making heritage, and coral sand beaches.

Barbados sits solitary on the Atlantic edge of the Lesser Antilles, defined by a distinct dual character. The calm, turquoise waters of its west and south coasts contrast sharply with the pounding Atlantic surf along the rugged east coast in Bathsheba. Beyond the resort strips, it offers UNESCO-listed colonial fortifications, working 17th-century rum distilleries, and roadside fish fries, providing more historical depth and independent exploration than many resort-heavy Caribbean neighbors.

Best time to go

May to June hits the sweet spot: dry enough skies, manageable heat, dropped hotel rates, and empty beaches.

What your 7-day plan includes

  • A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
  • Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
  • Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
  • Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.

How to plan 7 days in Barbados

  • Base yourself on the South Coast (Hastings or Worthing) if you want walkable restaurants, easy beach access, and cheap public transit without renting a car.
  • Rent a car for just 48 to 72 hours in the middle of your trip to loop the wild East Coast (Bathsheba), Animal Flower Cave in the north, and inland rum distilleries, then return it to avoid paying parking or driving stress.
  • Do not attempt to cross from the west coast to Bathsheba for a quick afternoon dip; the Atlantic surf is dangerous for casual swimming, and driving narrow inland country roads after sunset is challenging.
  • Hit Oistins Fish Fry on Friday for peak party energy and live calypso, or visit on Thursday or Saturday night if you want the exact same freshly grilled mahi-mahi without the massive cruise and tour bus queues.
  • Book a morning catamaran snorkeling excursion over Carlisle Bay shipwrecks before 10:00 AM to encounter sea turtles before jet skis and larger tour flotillas arrive.
