The Azores

Portugal

A 5-day trip to The Azores

Volcanic calderas, wild Atlantic coastlines, and thermal waters in Europe’s remote mid-ocean outpost.

Scattered nearly 1,000 miles off the coast of Lisbon in the North Atlantic, the Azores is an autonomous archipelago of nine volcanic islands defined by dramatic crater lakes, steaming fumaroles, and subtropical biodiversity. São Miguel, the primary gateway and commercial core, balances 18th-century black basalt architecture in Ponta Delgada with raw geological marvels like Sete Cidades and Furnas. Far from an urban resort getaway, the Azores rewards active travelers who value microclimate chases, world-class marine biology, and agrarian quiet over predictable beach weather and manicured nightlife.

How to plan 5 days in The Azores

  • Stay in Ponta Delgada for dining variety and evening walks, but split your stay with 2 nights in Furnas to experience geothermal pools after daytime crowds leave.
  • Never drive up to Miradouro da Boca do Inferno without checking the SpotAzores live camera first; heavy fog routinely obscures the caldera while the coast stays clear.
  • Pair Pico and Faial using the 30-minute passenger-and-car ferry between Madalena and Horta instead of flying inter-island hops.
  • Do not attempt to hike Mount Pico as an impromptu afternoon stop; the 1,000-meter vertical scramble requires an advance mountain-guide slot or GPS tracker registration at Casa da Montanha.
  • Book high-demand restaurants like A Tasca in Ponta Delgada at least one to two weeks ahead during shoulder and peak seasons.
