A 10-day trip to Antigua Guatemala

Antigua is a colonial town under volcanoes — cobblestones, ruins, and the coffee and Spanish-school capital of Central America.

Antigua is Central America's most beautiful town — a UNESCO colonial grid of cobblestones, pastel ruins, and three volcanoes behind. It's the coffee, Spanish-school, and volcano-trekking capital; learn Spanish, climb Pacaya, and watch a Semana Santa procession if you can. Best October–April; rainy season is May–October.

What your 10-day plan includes

  • A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
  • Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
  • Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
  • Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.

How to plan 10 days in Antigua Guatemala

  • Stay south of 6a Calle Oriente (near San Francisco) if you want silence at night away from the nightlife noise along 5a Avenida.
  • Pair Antigua with Lake Atitlán (a 2.5-hour shuttle ride away) rather than treating Antigua purely as a day trip from Guatemala City.
  • Do not book the overnight Acatenango volcano trek on your first day; take at least 48 hours in town to acclimate to Antigua's 5,000-foot altitude.
  • Book an ethical, licensed guide like OX Expeditions or Oldtown Outfitters at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead if tackling Acatenango or Pacaya.
  • Block off morning hours between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM for church ruins; the midday light is harsh and afternoon clouds frequently obscure volcano summits.
